When Was the Last Time You Checked Your Bra Size?

The Salon de Lingerie in Paris is the first exhibition showing the collections for autumn/winter 2009. Taking place in the massive Porte des Versaille conference centre it attracts exhibitors and buyers from across the globe. This January saw a more subdued event with fewer exhibitors and buyers making the trip. Despite the lower turn out the mood was optimistic and the collections more focussed than in previous years. o Real corsetry Structured and seamed pieces were prevalent for the autumn/winter 09. Satin and retro constructions were seen in the Der Kommisar and Sonia Rykel collections. There is more and more coverage over the torso with an increase in teddies and bodies. Jolidon combines the all in one style with seductive fabrics and the traditional colours of black and red. Suspender belts have followed this trend by becoming wider and more cinch-like in design.

The trend of real corsetry reflects the importance of tradition and heritage in lingerie while the new technology has made the designs more practical to wear in busy modern day life.

o Funky Couture Lace is major trend with guipure embroidery in combination with satin, targeted at younger women. Made by Niki is a perfect example of the use of traditional look and fit with modern colour combination. Marjolaine also reflects this in their silk nightwear combining lime green and cerise pink.

This funky new design has also spread to maternity wear, companies such as Hot Milk! and Agnes et Ses Princes use trimmings and bold printed fabrics to ensure femininity in these function pieces.

o Flowers with a difference Flowers are an enduring staple in lingerie design. English roses were used beautifully by Odille and Karen Millen, printed on satin with contrasting ribbons, bows or ruffles. Printed lingerie used organic floral development with soft colour contrasts, grey being used heavily in lavender and smoky tones.

o Romantic naturals Companies such as Calida and Hanro have moved back to their roots using natural cotton in their collections. The subdued colours available in cottons give a soft romantic palette with soft greys and beiges. Designers have taken classic designs and used handkerchief weaves and chunky lace detailing to give a contemporary edge.

Streetwear has been a notable influence using layering and adding knitted sweaters and garments have been re-proportioned to be more risqué while utilising old fashioned pointelle knits.

There has been an increased use of organic and biodegrable cottons but not at the expense of femininity. An extension of the use of cotton has been the spread of the preppy American college look epitomised by Venus et Jules.

o La Belle Epoque La Belle Epoque celebrates the eccentricity at this seasons show. The rich opulent colours combined with the seductive silky textures evoke an Art Nouveau drawing room. There has also been a strong influence of Liberty prints further adding to the richness of the collections. Improvements in technology allow designers to break the rules and move away from the traditional structure of pieces. Valery produced a beautiful collection incorporating a 2 way stretch taffeta in opulent colours.

o Geometric Geometric prints and design have made a steady impact over the past few year but they finally appear to be coming into their own. The innovative designs from Marlies Dekkers are clearly influencing the mainstream lingerie. Straps that cross at the back and additional straps across the décolletage and around the neck add sexiness through strong definite lines.

The improvement in the quality of printing geometric patterns has helped increase the popularity. The deep inky colours of the season benefit from the clear lines in the graphic designs.

Each year the Salon de Lingerie provides the focus of the next seasons lingerie trends and with the continuing innovation in fabrics and designs it will remain the most important event for the industry year after year.

The Lingerie Football League - No Joke

The idea of mixing lingerie with the NFL Super Bowl produced the lingerie bowl, a marketing stunt designed to pull in viewers. Well, they're taking it to a new level. Yes, there is a lingerie football league and it starts play this coming September.

As you might imagine, the lingerie game is played slightly differently. Instead of 11 versus 11, the teams each have seven players on the field at any one time. Yes, the ladies do play in lingerie, although they really stick to brief. They also wear pads and helmets, so the effect isn't really what one would imagine. There are no women running around in corsets or anything like that.

The rules of the game are generally the same as most football games, but there are exceptions. No punting or field goals are allowed, which already makes this better than the NFL. The field is only 50 yards long, which is half as long as what you see in the NFL. Each half is only 15 minutes long as well.

Lingerie in the '60s

The sixties is always thought of as the era of the mini-skirt and associated swinging designs.  But it didn't start out like that.  It all started in London, where I was living at the time. We'd just got through the '50s, which was still an age of austerity in England and much of Europe.

Not a mini-skirt in sight when I finished my compulsory service in the Royal Air Force in 1962.  Skirts were well below the knee, and the glimpse of a petticoat showing below it was very much to be deplored.

The USA was even more conservative, although there was much talk of 'Swinging London' when I visited in '66.  A couple of years earlier, a Swiss colleague had been asked to leave a restaurant in New York because he had a beard.  If you watch a '60s TV show such as "Get Smart" notice how the villains have foreign accents, and wear beards!

I guess it must all have started with the new general availability of "The Pill", as it was referred to.  The young ladies in London, initially, then all over the country, suddenly realised they didn't need to keep the boys under control, they could afford to tempt them!  The designers leapt at this opportunity to bring out new shorter skirts and dresses, and shorter, and shorter...

Another trend had to come into play here, for years girls had worn stockings, usually held up by suspenders,(garters) which hung from a suspender belt, or frequently a girdle.  Much effort was spent to ensure these did not show under the skirt, much like the VPL these days, for fear it would inflame the boys' ardour!

Now with the shorter skirt, stocking tops and all the accoutrements were in view if the girl leant over a little. This would not do, so some idiot invented the pantyhose, or tights (modified dance tights), the ugliest item of female clothing ever (Male opinion). Men's fantasies of women's hosiery were shattered overnight.

The designers had a field day, or several years of them.  Now it was quite possible that underwear, panties or knickers, would be glimpsed, if not displayed, so they had to be redesigned and given an endless array of colours and patterns.

At the other end of the body the once heavily disguised, or embarrassingly peeked bra strap and now part of the decoration, along with two or three more sets of straps.  Women's Bras became a subject that men could mention with only a little embarrassment.  A Plus Size Bra was still in the future.

So began a long era of new designs and different approaches, though we are condemned to see them being re-invented every few years.

Why Must Bra Straps Fall?

You've read up on the proper way to wear a bra. You understand the support is supposed to come from the band around the bottom of the bra. There's only one problem. Your bra straps keep falling off your shoulders and driving you nuts. Why must bra straps fall?

Bra straps can be insanely aggravating. This is particularly true if you are wearing a top wear they can get loose. Slowly you feel them edging towards the outer edge of your shoulder. The minute you reach for something and are distracted, they dive off your shoulder down to your elbow or as far as they can go. It isn't a good look. Even if you catch the straps slipping, it is incredibly annoying to continually have to deal with them.

If you have strap slippage problems, there are a couple of things you can do. The first is obvious - adjust the straps! Sometimes, you can buy an "ender bra". What is an ender bra? It is bra that you try on with the adjustments already set at one end or the other of the available choices. When you go to adjust anything, you find that it is impossible because you are already using the last possible adjustment. Watch out for ender bras!

What if you've tried adjusting the straps this way and that with no luck? There are two possible issues. The first is you need to go down a band size. In doing so, you are going to get more strap adjustment capability, which might take care of things. If a lower band size doesn't fit, it may be time to take a look at a different style and brand of bra. Every bra from every brand is different, so you might find the solution in making this simple change.

There are some other factors to consider. The first might be that your bra is worn out. The straps tend to reveal this when elasticity is lost. Don't mistake straps that are worn out for loose ones. Replace your bra when it wears out because a worn out bra does not provide the support you need.

The second issue might be your anatomy. The idea of bra sizes is somewhat of a laughable one. We do not come in particular sizes. In fact, our two breasts don't even match each other. How then are we supposed to find a standard bra?! With this in mind, there may not be a perfect bra for you. In such a situation, you want to find the bra that fits best regardless of strap slippage. Once you have it, consider buying strap supports. These effectively connect the straps up behind your neck and keep them from sliding down.

Sliding bra straps can be a serious pain in the derriere. Still, give some thought to why they are sliding. The answer could give you some insight into whether you are wearing the right bra size or not.
